A brief history of Project Skate



  • August 2003- The kids in Rice Lake are increasingly frustrated with the inadequate local skatepark. Laura Lorentz forms a committee of local skateboarders and interested parties. She planned a meeting to discuss options, and Project Skate was born. Our first fundraising event was planned; a car wash was conducted at the end of the month.

  • Fall 2003- Leaf-raking is conducted as a fundraiser.

  • Winter 2003/2004- Local roller-rink hosts our first indoor skate jam fundraiser. Snow-shoveling is conducted as a fundraiser. Skaters wish winter was over.

  • Spring 2004- Fundraising concert is planned by skateboarders. Concert is held at the Boys and Girls Club of Rice Lake. Donations are requested via newspaper, radio, and flyers. More fundraising concerts. Rice Lakes largest garage sale is hosted by Project Skate. $20,000 is promised from the Boys and Girls Club of Rice Lake. Battle of the Bands is held as a fundraising event. Gas station coupon books are sold to raise funds. Car wash is conducted.

  • Summer/Fall 2004- Project Skate visits numerous skateparks and discusses likes and dislikes of the various parks. Discussions with the local skateboarders helps determine future plans for raising funds and our park design. Skatepark design company, Plywood Benders, presents various designs to Project Skate. The youth work with Plywood Benders and discuss a park design.

  • Winter 2004/2005- Project Skate works with local engineers in determining a new location for the skatepark.

  • Spring 2005- Project Skate determines location for skatepark. Parks and Recreation approves Project Skates request for a 100 by 150 piece of land owned by the City of Rice Lake. Project Skate loses a member in a car accident. After discussion with his parents, Project Skate decides to make the skatepark a memorial park. T-shirt graphic is designed, production of t-shirts begins. T-shirt sales begin.

  • Summer 2005- Items purchased/donated for a raffle. Another concert is conducted. Project Skate hosts its first annual skateboard demo to raise community awareness and funds. Fundraising concert. Kiwanis club pledges $500. Project Skate orders 200 skateboard decks to sell. In the process of printing 200 t-shirts.

  • Sept. 2005- contacted the community churches for donations.

  • September 2005- Kiwanis presentation/ pledged $500 when we reach $25,000.

  • Dec. 2005- Rotary presentation (donation request)

  • Dec. 23, 2005- Fundraising concert hosted by Northern Star Theater raises $900.

  • Dec. 27, 2005- Postle's Skate City held a skate jam, $50 was raised.
  • Jan. 21, 2006- Fundraising concert/Northern Star Theater, $1,416 raised.

  • Feb. 11, 2006- Fundraising concert hosted by Northern Star Theater, $1000 raised.

  • Feb. 2006- Rice Lake Mens Club pledges $1,000 / keeping in a cd until we raise $75,000.

  • March 11, 2006- Northern Star Theater hosts Battle of the Bands and raises $1,300. Over $1,000 in prize money is given to the top 3 bands.

  • April 15, 2006- Concert at Northern Star Theater

  • May 20, 2006- Safety demo at Cedar Mall

  • June 17, 2006- 2nd annual skate demo/competition 200+ people, Shannon Nordin of Oshkosh, WI took 1st in competition, Jake Nesseth of Barron, WI took 2nd in competition. Over $1,000 raised during benefit.

  • June 18, 2006- Project Skate participates in Aquafest parade. Link Brothers loaned a truck to pull our trailer. Skateboarders and a bmx rider showed there skills during the parade. We handed out t.shirts and candy.

  • June 19, 2006- Raffle drawing took place. 6th place, a $25 gift certificate to Play It Again Sports. 5th place, an autographed Falco Baltys skate deck. 4th place, an autographed Mentality skate deck. 3rd place, a $100 Butcher shop gift certificate. 2nd place, a bmx bike. 1st place, a Premiere drum set.

  • July 22, 2006- Postle's Skate City hosts a fundraising concert and skate jam. $550 was raised.

  • August 19, 2006- Fundraising concert held at the Elk's Club raised $750

  • October 28, 2006- Elk's Club host a concert that raised nearly $900. Pizzas donated by Dominos.

  • November 18, 2006- Northern Star Theatre concert raises $600.

  • December 23, 2006- Northern Star Theatre concert raises $1100.

  • January 13, 2007- Northern Star Theatre concert raises $900.
